Make a DIY Film Reminder for Your 35mm Cameras!

There are times when I use cameras that have no slots for the tabs of film boxes, and thus, I often forget which film I am shooting with (or if the camera is loaded, even). So, to remedy this problem, I thought of making my own film reminder! Learn how to make your own in this quick and easy tipster!

Cut out the front portion of your 35mm film box as per above.

Step 2:

  1. Take your cardstock/packaging and mark along the edges of your film box cut-out. Then, measure and mark 1 cm on the right, left, and bottom side of the film box cut-out. Measure and mark 1.5 cm on the top potion of the film box cut-out. You should have two rectangles—one with the same size as the film box cut-out, and an outer rectangle that is slightly larger than the inner rectangle.
  2. Make another rectangle next to the one you just made. It should be nearly as big as your film box cut out, with 1 cm “borders” at the sides and at the bottom, but none at the top. You should have something that looks like the second photo above.

Step 3:

  1. Using an Xacto knife and a cutting mat (you can also use the scissors, but the Xacto knife cuts cleaner), cut out the two rectangles and you should have two pieces.
  2. Take the one with an inner rectangle and cut it out too, to make the bigger piece look like a frame.
  3. You should have two pieces that look like the ones in the third photo above.

Step 4:

Now, take your film box cut-out and a sheet of transparency film. Cut out a slightly bigger piece than the film box cut-out.

Step 5:

  1. Take some clear tape and stick the transparency film you cut out earlier onto the back of the frame-like rectangle
  2. Take some more clear tape and use them to join the two rectangular pieces together. They should look like an envelope when taped together.

Step 6:

Your film box cut out should fit nicely inside! But don’t push it all the way in, just enough for it to be displayed nicely behind the transparency film.

  1. To finish the film reminder, take the puncher and make a hole on the upper right corner of the front piece.
  2. The front piece is made larger precisely for this purpose. It should look like the second photo above.
  3. Now, it’s time for us to make something to attach the film reminder we just made onto the camera. Take a piece of nylon cord and make a knot.
  4. Make sure to leave a little “tail” at the bottom of the knot.
  5. Using the lighter, quickly singe or burn the tail until it melts along with the knot.
  6. This should reinforce the knot we just made, so it won’t easily unravel.

  1. Loop the cord inside the punched hole of the film reminder, and you’re all set! You can insert the end of your detachable camera strap inside the cord and close it so the film reminder hangs nicely along your camera strap…
  2. . …or simply use a short ball chain with lock so you can attach and detach it with ease on any camera strap!

That’s it, your camera now has a nifty companion to remind you of the film it’s loaded with!
